Yay for words happening! *\O/* You don't need to keep track of the count, it's completely up to you to report a specific word count. Most of us do it as a kind of validation, I believe, as many or most of us are using word count as a measuring unit for our writing. Personally I'm also counting time when I'm doing editing or research, as the validation of that helps me keeping motivated, and am sometimes also not counting written words because I can't be bothered; but for WED I'm only reporting written words I actually counted, without any specific reason.
