That's an interesting approach to being stuck! I don't think it'd work for me, though, as I'd fear it'd influence my own ideas and take on things too much. But I can imagine that this also depends on fandom - I'm writing Tolkienverse only these days, and that in areas and fannish corners where half if not most of what you write is original anyway, or bordering on original since no canon exists for that or canon is too contradictory to make sense of it. I do have this kind of inspiration for problem-solving on occasion, too, but it always comes from either a different medium (movies or series, or even video games) or from a completely different genre, like original published fiction for fandom issues and vice versa.
