~ ~ ~

[personal profile] ysilme here: that Christmas story seems about to be happening after all. The last idea finally took root, and I've about 100 words so far I think I'll keep. I still don't know if it leads somewhere useable for the purpose, but at least something is happening. :o)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: Today, I absolutely did not write 266 words of that SGA story I'm not writing. ;-) Otherwise, it was a day of grading, writing of college recommendation letters, and an evening obligation at work. *sighs*
fadedwings: (GO: Cool shades)

[personal profile] fadedwings 2019-10-07 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This morning I did the final edit of my last exchange assignment and posted that. Then I revised a little ficlet and posted it to [community profile] fan_flashworks

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent progress and even more excellent news! I hope the words just keep flowing for you!
nafs: red dragon on lavendar background - welsh or celtic style (Default)

[personal profile] nafs 2019-10-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Almost an hour of writing time today. A lot of it trying to define the ever-elusive structure (it would help if I'd any idea how I'm going to rewrite the last 1/3 of the story). Got two pages of longhand in on a new scene.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish you luck in finding the solution to your pace/flow problems; I can empathize for sure. Yay for new words too!
cornerofmadness: (Default)

[personal profile] cornerofmadness 2019-10-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for the Christmas story and for the story you totally aren't writing.

If not for writing during an exam today jack would have gotten done. 985 words on my IWRY story
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That's an excellent word count, particularly for an exam-writing day!

Oct 7: Lots of adulting today (job interview!), so alibi sentence.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, adulting! I hope you kicked ass in the interview! :-). Also, yay for an alibi sentence in that case!
alexcat: (Default)

[personal profile] alexcat 2019-10-08 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Day 6, I did a Babylon 5 update at 621 and a rewatch post for 472 words. Today I did 296 on a ficlet for spooktober.

Day 7 -- 100+ more words on the indulgent thing (still title-less) and a poem for Fan Flashworks.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes the title is the hardest part, in my experience. Yay for new words and a poem!
bookherd: (Default)

[personal profile] bookherd 2019-10-08 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Day 7: 2050 words, which is especially nice because I was sure it was going to be an alibi sentence sort of day.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
WOW! You rock! Awesome word count! *\o/*

Don't you love surprise words? *grins*
auroracloud: a fountain pen against a sheet of paper and writing (writing)

[personal profile] auroracloud 2019-10-08 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I only got to writing when it was late and I was tired, due to all the other programming (plus a book that kept stealing my attention), but I did add some sentences of fic and some sentences of novel, so that's something. Even if I don't know if the fic is going anywhere - it just keeps having internal monologue rather than any dialogue or events.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm familiar with the internal monologue phase of writing; it's both enjoyable and frustrating, in my experience. Yay for words, at any rate, and here's hoping you find the external monologues soon. :-)
china_shop: Close-up of Zhao Yunlan grinning (Default)

[personal profile] china_shop 2019-10-08 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
Day 8: 538 words on the same (hopefully) flashfic. :-)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Excellent work! Yay! :-)

Checking in for day 8: I wrote around 500 words of ending ughhhhhh. Endings are hard.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Endings are SO hard! Yay for writing words and good luck on the ending!
mergatrude: a skein, a ball and a swatch of home spun and dyed blue yarn (Default)

[personal profile] mergatrude 2019-10-08 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
Day 5: snuck away to write an alibi sentence and ended up with two paragraphs in my notebook.

Days 6 and 7 were spent with friends and family, and I didn't even try to fit in some writing time.

Day 8: Typed up the words from Day 5 (79 - mustn't count them twice) and added another 131 words.
ysilme: Close up of the bow of a historic transport boat with part of the sail. (Skarsvag - words)

[personal profile] ysilme 2019-10-08 11:37 am (UTC)(link)
I've edited you in! Don't worry about the word count, that's your own matter, but for the purpose of WED typing up longhand on another day counts for both days in my book. It's about the process of writing, no matter what, after all. :o)
mergatrude: a skein, a ball and a swatch of home spun and dyed blue yarn (Default)

[personal profile] mergatrude 2019-10-08 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. :)

It's the case that I always edit when I transcribe, so I am completely on board with your judgement here.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Any progress is commendable! Sometimes life just makes it more difficult to get things done, doesn't it? At least it sounds like you had a GOOD distraction. :-)
mergatrude: a skein, a ball and a swatch of home spun and dyed blue yarn (Default)

Thank you. I did. :)

[personal profile] ysilme 2019-10-08 11:33 am (UTC)(link)
Boo on evening obligations, I think that should be prohibited. ;o) But go you for no words on the story you're not writing! ^^ (You have the cutest project names for your works! Ambush story, the story you're not writing... ♥ )
I added some 160 more words to my OS draft last night, and now have a skeleton of a story with a beginning and a possible end. Yay?
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
*sighs* Yes, it was onerous, and I'm glad it's all done for this year. Thank you for the kind words of support, my friend, and let me offer them right back to you for your progress on the recalcitrant story! Yay! Yay! Yay!

[personal profile] silveradept 2019-10-08 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Day 7 meant checking an assignment for autocucumber and typos, and then posting it, and then grinding out a post that could be summarized as "WTF" but needs more than just that to explain it properly, covering just the first half of a super-long chapter in the source.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-08 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds very productive, if also a bit slog-like. I hope you're able to move on to more enjoyable writing soon. :-)

[personal profile] silveradept 2019-10-08 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
At this point, it's tipped over from "I know the Suck Fairy has visited" through "it can't keep getting worse, can it?" and now we're at "it's fascinating looking at the local wildlife at the bottom of this miles-deep trench the authors have dug." Which is, to some degree, enjoyable, because there's a certain amount of "now I can say, with exhaustive study, that this is a series that needs a lot of fix-it fic."
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-09 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
If I can ask (and please, if you'd rather just point me in the direction of where it all started, I'm happy to find the answer for myself), what inspired you to start what sounds like an enormous project? (I haven't read the Pern books--I think that's what you're reviewing (?)--but I know there are MANY of them and that they're something of a sacred cow for a certain demographic of the SFF community.) I mean, it sounds like worthwhile work that contributes to fan and discipline discourse, but it also sounds like...just a ton of heavy lifting.

[personal profile] silveradept 2019-10-09 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's the Pern books. It started mostly because I had read several of them when I was younger, and inspired by others who were doing good deconstructing work with popular media of the time, I thought I would tackle them, thinking I'd have a few things to say about them here and there, but mostly going "dragons! And improbable science!"

And then I got into them, and they were so much more than that, and I've been doing it as a weekly post well away from where the fandom congregates in the idea of trying to keep an old community alive, and I'm into the second author's work by now, so there's still a few books to go, but I want to have the whole set done, including the newest one, as, I dunno, maybe my attempt at constructing a big statue for a legacy of some sort? And because it's giving me a reason to actually finish out a series that I probably would have thrown against the wall a long time ago?

Someone else has suggested importing the work to AO3, which sounds kind a good idea for having a backup copy available, and also means the possibility of the fandom finding the project I've been doing for the last several years and having an opinion about it.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-09 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I love that you view critique as a tribute because it SO much is, but I think some folks have a sort of knee-jerk reaction to ANY criticism as "ruining" the original work(s). I also like that you're still engaging with the texts even though they're disappointing you, especially since some of the series were influential for you when you were a younger and different reader. That balance of enjoying something for what it is, taking it at face value, and then, too, challenging its fallacies and assumptions and holding the cracks up to the light--that's delicate.
silveradept: A kodama with a trombone. The trombone is playing music, even though it is held in a rest position (Default)

[personal profile] silveradept 2019-10-09 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It is tribute, even if what it is ends up being "Here be dragons" about the series, and since I still see people reading the series, I want them to go in with some knowledge of what is happening.

I also think that for some part of fannish history (and now), the people having a reaction that all critique is bad sometimes includes the authors of the work themselves. So there's also a certain amount of spite involved in creating out, since the author was very protective of her series in life.

Hope this isn't too late -- I fell asleep early last night, then started baking bread first thing in the morning and forgot to check in. Oops.

Not much to report -- worked on the nonfiction project and noodled on the fic I'm trying to write for fan_flashworks. Not sure if it's working. We'll see.
sylvanwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] sylvanwitch 2019-10-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] ysilme is very meticulous about keeping track, so I wouldn't worry about being late. I've had one or two days, too, when I've forgotten until well into the following day. Life happens, right?

Here's wishing you words that stick with both projects, particularly the second, since it's the one you're unsure of. :-)
