[personal profile] ysilme here: between a massive headache from lack of sleep and exhaustion and a large family-get together for my eldest niece's and my sister's birthday, I managed to get in whopping 1,4k of new words and am really proud. *g* I took my notebook with me, half- pretending to have something urgent to finish, so got a blessedly quiet hour for myself in their study which worked out really well. I wonder if I should new ways to write and/or create small pockets of me-time in otherwise overwhelming family situations (I love them all dearly, but I'm too much of an Aspie to find it easy to bear for so many hours, and usually end up totally exhausted from just a few hours of seeing them all) in the future.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: We had a long day of errands, and it seems I'm also coming down with something (likely a cold), so by the time we got home and got the groceries put away and dinner sorted, I was pretty grainy-eyed and exhausted. Thankfully, this morning, I spent about a half-hour before we left working on the fall festival spooky story I've been playing with for a couple of weeks now. I edited it through, taking out far more words than I added in, and then got to the same spot where I'd left off and realized that I still don't know where I want it to end. That's okay, though. There's nothing urgent about it, and I feel like I accomplished something, at any rate. So that's my writing for the day.

I finished the first scene of firelight ch 5—draft is currently clocking 24K altogether—and I have the sneaking suspicion that not only is the narrative midpoint again not where I left it, but this story is, by SFWA standards if perhaps not NaNoWriMo's, a novel-length fic.

I finished the last exchange fic I needed to write. Well, all but the last edit. I added about 400 or so new words and then I did my painful revising where I read the draft out loud and record it so I can listen and see where things stick or just don't work etc. It's really helpful but kind of painful. So I did that then put the revised draft on my kindle to read and caught a few things that needed to change from that read through and now it's just waiting to be beta'd.
I spent pretty much all day on it, but it's done and I'm very happy about that :)

Tomorrow I'm going apple picking with the family, so I'm probably not going to get a lot of writing done, though I will try and get some done in the morning before we leave. That was one of the reasons I really wanted to finish this today.

I'm so impressed with your process--it sounds super-thorough (and yes, painful--I'd also be uncomfortable listening to my words read aloud by me, I think) and practical and useful. Congratulations for getting through it all! Yay!

[personal profile] ysilme, I think your idea about finding a little you-time to get away from the bustle and noise of family gatherings is an excellent one, and I hope your family will continue to be understanding of it. I'm also awed by that word count, particularly given the conditions in which you created them! Brava! That's awesome! Yay! :-)

That's an extra-great word count given that you weren't home most of the day!

Also, thanks for the kindness. Yeah, I think the spooky story is probably going to be relegated to the interesting exercise pile, but I've been enjoying playing with language, so there's that. I suppose there might be a market for it somewhere, but I haven't had the time or energy to do any research. *sighs*

I wrote maybe about 500 words on the ambush project, which I keep writing by hand in a notebook which is why I can only approximate the word count. But I'm starting to have more plot as well as a clearer idea of the world, yay!

Congrats [personal profile] ysilme for writing that much despite headache, exhaustion and family get-together - for me such days are usually "write a few incoherent sentences" days. Though on the other hand, writing as an escape from overwhelming socializing can work. Might be a good strategy in the future, yes!

And well done [personal profile] sylvanwitch as well for working on your story despite having a busy day! Editing is important work as well, not only the kind of writing that adds more words. :-)

Thank you! Usually they're that for me, too, which is why I'm even more happy about such a result. I'm going to try something similar on the next occasions, too; it's nothing uncommon on our family get-togethers that two or three people wander off to do something on the side, or my father retires for a nap or so. *g*
Go you about the longhand writing, too. I'm in awe of people doing this, as I find this so laborious myself. (The main reason for that is that I can't read my own handwriting when I'm writing quickly, which I tend to do when writing fic, so I always have a hard time deciphering it afterwards. *g* )

Day five finally finished a chapter for me on grief-giving, so that's good. But that means I'm queued up to the middle of the book, and so there's a lot more space to cover all before I can get done with this one and hustle to the next. The fact that I'm relatively close to the end is making me want to hurry up and get done with it.

I can definitely relate; I have a similar reaction when I'm nearing the end of a project I'm looking forward to being done with. I wish you good haste (and good words)!
