Wheeee!

Aug 2nd - 1047 words. An expanded ficathon fill, and the start of a challenge fic. Got to try to finish this one tomorrow because the challenges are starting to pile up - I have two more to write for already!

It is! One of my new year's resolutions this year - I try to pick a few fun ones - is to listen to a new album each month and then review them on my blog here! Fun to do and gives me something different to blog about!

Aug 2. I, um, corrected a whole fleet of typos? (One typo, which appeared eight places.)

Also a friend sent me a pronunciation guide for all the names in this podfic I'm supposed to record; I listened to half of it, and then had to go rest on my fainting couch.

Oh, no! Well, good luck with the pronunciations (just tell me it’s not Welsh—lol!) and yay for defeating those typos!

Welsh doesn’t scare me; I had to learn that ‘tl’ sound for an indigenous language I studied. I’m assured it’s nicely phonetic if you understand the system. (She says, not having studied Welsh.)

No this is French, which I struggle with. Happily I have a friend to help me out with it!

Happily, I took French in school, which has been very useful for podficcing. Best of luck with those r's! Is that the most difficult part for you?

Hearing what I'm supposed to be doing, and then mimicking it with any kind of grace. So many of the sounds are undervoiced (to American ears), that I'm not always sure what I'm even hearing, and then trying to recreate them... Ugh. Lead-footed clodhopper on a Regency dance floor.

But Garonne was very good about doing it both at-speed and slowed-down and overpronounced, so she's given me my best chance at it. Please do not think I'm complaining about her assistance or her language!

She's helped me a lot with Gaelic pronunciation, too, although I can't claim to actually sound good as a result of it. But much less wrong than I would be otherwise! The slowed-down and at-speed versions are great, I agree.

Yes, she's helping us with our Gaelic, too! Although Gaelic is gonna be Phoenix's problem, not mine.

We have several stories that have varying amounts of French, but for the story that takes place in a fantasy France, the one with the loooooooooooooooooooong list of French names but in which there is no French dialog, I'm considering keeping to Garonne's pronunciations but not attempting her accent (as much as that distinction can be made). In context, I'm not sure that it makes sense to have everyone's names be in a wildly different accent than the rest of the narration? And I am unconvinced that my attempts to switch in and out of a French accent three times in a sentence are going to give anyone any pleasure.

Well, if it's fantasy France instead of real France, that gives you an out, too! But yeah, I think the approach of trying to get the sounds but not the melody of speech right can be a good one.

Congrats on the word counts!

Day 2: 1188 words of "I Don't Like Your Girlfriend — Remix"! This puts me about halfway through chapter 59. Unless something else catches my attention, I've decided to go ahead and finish this up before working on anything else, which will let me pump up my word count for the year with minimum effort while also letting me reduce my number of WIPs by 1.
