Regarding the question about WED and possible other content the other day, the answers to the question we posted showed a clear preference to keep WED as it is, with a focus on writing and written words being necessary to report for the daily tally.

That being said, the challenge has always been very open and accommodating about what counts as “words written”. The alibi sentence is a thing, and it’s always been up to every participant themselves to decide what they count for “writing” on any given day: as far as I know we’ve had fiction, non-fiction, poetry, meta, blog entries, personal journals, comments, reviews, and doubtlessly even more I don’t remember. We’ve also always had participants who also talked about other creative or non-creative projects they were working at or dealing with, and this has always been perfectly fine, provided what they reported for the daily tally was something written, and the overall focus remained on writing. It’s also never been mandatory to only check in when writing happened; some people also come to find sympathy and support for not writing or having problems with writing and so on.

All of this is fine, but there are good reasons why some of us want to keep this challenge focused on writing, and why we’re taking turns in hosting the challenge for the mutual support and encouragement we’re getting from it, often also taking the time necessary for putting the tally posts together and commenting on people’s reports and comments out of our own writing time.

One reason is that we think it’s important to focus on one craft alone, which is writing, and to aim at doing it constantly. Doing this over months and years isn’t easy, and often even a struggle, but going through this together with others has for many of us changed the way how we approach writing, helped us form new writing habits, and brought us onwards with our respective goals as writers, for whatever purpose.

Another reason is that we think the mutual support and encouragement in this group for our craft with all its joys and worries wouldn’t work as well, if it’s not shared by people with the same experiences. We think that what the group offers us wouldn’t work as well, or perhaps at all, if this were to change and we’d change towards a group doing different crafts.

At the same time, a lot of people seem to be interested in a different approach, and all of us welcome the opportunity for everybody with their craft to share a smiliar experience than we do with WED. So this is also a shout-out to any of you who’re interested, to create a sister challenge, like Create Every Day (CED) or so. There’s no reason why we can’t have both, and one of the suggestions also was linking to the other challenge respectively in the first and/or last posts of the month, so people would be aware of both challenges.

So if anybody of you is interested, feel free to start this, and do it in a manner similar to WED, or however it works out, and see what happens!
Neither [personal profile] sylvanwitch nor I, [personal profile] ysilme , are interested in hosting it, as for both of us the focus and purpose of such a challenge clearly is with writing. We’re happy to put in a link to whatever is going to happen, though, and will certainly check it out!

Days 1-10 )

Day 11: [personal profile] china_shop, [personal profile] lilacsigil

Let us know if we missed you or if you didn't check in for a while, so we can add you. Of course joining the fun is possible at any point.

~ ~ ~

[personal profile] ysilme here: I polished an older fic, prepared it for posting, and posted the first chapter, organised my NaNo prep a bit and pondered the edits to my Christmas story. Not many new words, but writing-related things happened.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch: Technically, it's Day 12 in my part of the world, but we were on the road for eight+ hours tonight, and I've only just gotten settled in the hotel room. Before we left, I wrote a very quick poem about my anxiety, which has flared because we're travelling (my very first experiences of anxiety were around travel, and that has remained a constant *sighs*). Anyway, we're here to celebrate my best friend's birthday for the weekend--much good food, conversation, rambles in the woods, and book-shop browsing. If I'm a little short in my comments, please don't take it personally--I'll do my best to make the time to be here for you all! :-)
