Day 8: More redrafting, less smooth than yesterday's but still making progress. And now I need to decide what order these scenes are going in and why, hmmm.

I like the jigsaw puzzle bit when you figure out where pieces go, but I also understand that it can be frustrating if the pieces just won't quite mesh. I hope it goes smoothly for you!

Day 8: 400 words of original fic, co-written with my eight-year-old niece in the backseat of the car, about a horse-crazy girl who finally gets a horse. A time-honoured trope, I suppose.

And now I am FINALLY HOME and will get ALONE TIME for the rest of the week. *zonks into bed*

YAY for home and alone time! (Home alone time?) and for horse-girls and the horses they love! (I am a former horse girl who got a horse, and I can tell you it is the trope of my heart.)

Me, too. I had three over my lifetime (see my reply below, if you're interested--I won't talk your ear off otherwise ;-), and sometimes I miss it, but mostly I know that my current life just doesn't give me the time and focus I'd need to do right by a horse.

What a good first experience! She looks like exactly the perfect horse for you to learn on! I’m so glad it wasn’t terrifying for you; I’ve seen people turned off by their first ride, and that always makes me sad.

Oh, I didn't know that either, how cool! :o) I was a bit horse-crazy for a while although couldn't afford lessons at the time and had no other opportunities, but finally learned to ride in my early twenties when I finally could, just to find I enjoyed it but wasn't crazy about it any longer, so discontinued when uni took up speed. But from a writer's perspective it's been very useful to have learned that, and to know my way around horses a bit. *g*

Sometimes I forget how compartmentalized my life has been over the years and that there are intimate elements of my personality that "newer" friends are completely unaware of, such as that I grew up completely in love with horses, and when I was 15, we moved to a semi-rural neighborhood. We had a barn in our yard, though very little land, and two doors down was a boarding stable. I ended up getting a job at the stable, cleaning stalls and working as a general helper, and then I took in a camp horse for one season, Red. Red was an awesome old girl, and I really learned to ride and do all sorts of stuff with her. (Camp horses are horses used at summer camp who need foster homes for the other nine months of the year.) After I'd proved to my parents that I could care for a horse, they bought one for me from folks down the road whose kids had grown up, moved away, and left their horse behind.

That horse was Tai, an American Quarter Horse/Arabian mix. I had Tai until my second year of graduate school, when I realized it was unfair of me to live eight hours away and not have anyone riding him regularly. (He got exercise--my dad used to put him out in the pasture next door with the boarding barn horses, so he wasn't lonely or anything like that, and Dad would lunge him in our small ring too.) I gave him to an eleven-year-old girl, who loved him and took him to 4-H horse shows, and had him until he passed away.

When I moved home after grad school, I bought my own horse, a three-year-old red Pinto filly I named Guinevere. I had Guin for about 10 months. Unfortunately, when I indicated to my mother that I was intending to keep dating my boyfriend (now husband), who is not white, my mother threw me out of the house, and she threatened to sell Guin to a meatpacker if I didn't get her out of the barn. I couldn't afford boarding costs, but a friend who owned a boarding stable (not the one next door) allowed me to move her in for a month. I had to sell her, which broke my heart, and I haven't had my own horse since because it's just an enormous expenditure of money and, most importantly, time, and as I was early in my teaching career and had just moved in with T., etc., it just wasn't going to work.

In one of those bittersweet twists of fate, the house we live in now, that we inherited from T's dad, is directly across the road from a boarding stable, but I have never worked up the courage to go over there. I love hearing the horses whinny in the morning for their grain, though, and enjoy watching them in the pasture and the riding ring. Maybe someday, when I'm retired, I'll volunteer over there.
