zwei_hexen: Wordle: about writing (Ysilme 2)
[personal profile] zwei_hexen
There's something on my mind I ([personal profile] ysilme) would like to bring to your attention, although I'm speaking here for me as a long-time participant of WED. Some of us are doing the snowflake challenge this year, myself included, and the last prompt is about pimping our favourite communities and challenges. I imagine some of you are thinking about listing WED in your answer of this snowflake challenge prompt. I kindly would like to ask you to not pimp this community, not there, and not in any community- and challenge-listing or recommending group or location either. The reason is realtively simple: WED, unlike any other challenge or community I know, exists only because every month, one (or two) of us takes a turn in hosting the challenge in our own journal. Doing so requires some work, not only the daily tally posts and the coding or gathering of links involved, but also the commenting ot the other participants. This challenge only works because each month somebody is doing it, and because we're a limited group of people. But if the group gets too large, this will become difficult, and might well become impossible at some point - or it'll be harder and harder to find hosters who have the energy and leisure to do this for a really large group of people. Also, the larger the group is growing, the higher are the chances that the work of doing it is left to a few stalwart people, with more and more people coming and going without really contributing to it, and thus keeping it alive. I don't mean by this that the group needs to be kept hidden or something, or that new people aren't welcome - on the contrary. But I've always got the impression that the best way to grow for Write Every Day is to grow organically, to get around by the grapevine, to be found by people through seeing it happen on a friend or acuqaintance's journal, become interested, and try it out - while having already seen on their friend's journal etc. how it works. I've found the group myself in the very same way, watched it happen two or three times on a friend's journal, and eventually thought I'd give it a go. This was over three years ago, and during this time the size of the group has stayed more or less the same, perhaps with a little increase, and has stayed manageable and a living and welcoming community. We're all participating because we're getting something out of it, and are giving back to the community as well as we can. But we're not a service offered by a handful of people to anybody interested, at least this is my personal viewpoint of WED - I might be wrong. And I honestly worry that that if the group is announced in a place with a large audience, like a reccing community or the snowflake challenge, there might be a large influx of people not taking the time to find out how this really works, particuarly since we don't have fixed rules, or even a place where people can look things up. (Ysilme)

[personal profile] ysilme here: 211 new words for me on a day otherwise still spent recuperating, as the 6th is a holiday in my state. Tomorrow, the new year'll start in earnest. Thank you all for your well-wishes, they were much appreciated!

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: 796 words to finish the first draft of the MPI story. That feels pretty good! :-)

it isn't "yay", exactly, 'cause he's the villain of the series

but it's so much more interesting if he knows wtf he's doing and still gets his coward ass beat by a couple of stubborn teenagers

This is a new job -- I haven't even been there a month yet. Before this, I worked evenings/weekends, so I had all day long to write. Since starting this job, I've had to fight and claw for every little bit of time to write, and it has all been rather unpleasant and desperate feeling. (Boo.)

I'm hoping things will steady out as I become more used to the job, but at the moment, I'm mostly trying to figure out how to get some writing time in -- and not only get the writing time in, but enjoy it, too.

Day 6 - First day back at work for me, so that was a lot of energy spent on that and not on words. But I did get words -- 143 more on the SWG piece from yesterday, and I got feedback on the FFWorks piece from Sunday, so hopefully I will find the time to post that tomorrow.

I was back at work today, bleh. Good luck with your first day back! And yay for words!

The porny thing continued to be relatively easy to write - 596 words added to that this evening. I can feel myself getting a little more wobbly there as they *ahem* actually get into it, so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

I totally agree that because of the nature of the challenge, it's better to let it grow organically via people finding it through their friends etc. There are communities like [community profile] inkingitout and [community profile] getyourwordsout which have organized the support for steady writing differently and can handle bigger crowds.

Glad you've been able to rest and recuperate, [personal profile] ysilme. The 6th is a holiday here as well, not that it makes a lot of difference in my current life situation. Congrats to both of you for your words!

As for my writing on the 6th, the ambush project did its ambushing thing and I ended up with probably over 500 new words for it - I still do it writing by hand in a notebook, so word counts are always estimates based on the page count. I am wondering if I should start typing up parts of it, but I also feel like the handwriting is a part of the spell.

[personal profile] ysilme, I think your reasoning is sound. I really like how this is a small community, as I find large ones a little overwhelming. I am prone to FOMO, so the more people I feel I have to keep up with, the more stressed out I get. :-/

I'm glad you're feeling better and hope the words keep flowing.

Day 6 - alibi haiku, though it needs a little work before its done.

Day 7 - I started typing up the handwritten ficlet. I know the ending, though there's a few more words between me and it.

Day 6 - 1195 words! Mondays are my day for writing the week's Torchwood drabbles, so 4 of those, a bit on a WiP, and editing of 2 fics for posting.

Leaving fics to rest for a bit lets me look at them with fresh eyes and see not only typos but places where more dialogue is needed, or something doesn't make sense, or it's repetetive. I could go on editing and tweaking some pieces forever, but I try not to do that, lol!

Ah, that's a big change to your routine and your energy usage during the day, I imagine! I can easily imagine how difficult it is to fit in writing time, and how frustrating it sometimes can be that there doesn't seem any energy for it. But you'll get there! Sending lots of energy and motivation your way! *hugs*

It is *such* an adjustment, I'm sure, and I can definitely relate to what you say here about *enjoying* the writing. One of the purposes WED serves for me is making me write when I resent having to do it. Sometimes, often even, writing is a carrot--it's the thing I get to do that I love. But often enough, too, it's a thing I just have to do.

I hope you find the balance you need. I wish that for you. :-)
