[personal profile] ysilme here: For the 5th, I added another couple of alibi sentences. Today went better with 1,1k for a blog entry I'm preparing.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: This evening, I added 1212 to the novel, including the start of Chapter Twenty-Three. We're getting there. SLOWLY. But we're getting there. ;-)

Go you for that awesome word count! *\O/*
47 stitches sounds cool, but I imagine you're using thicker wool than I do for socks. I'm currently working on my usual Christmas socks for my large-footed partner and have 68 stitches on my needles... You're knitting front and back, are you, and not on the round? (Correct term? My knitting English is somewhat lacking.)

Thanks!

I'm using double knitting and 3 1/4 mm needles, so probably it is thicker wool but my arms only measure 4 inches around the wrist so they're tiny.

Yes, I'm knitting from one needle to the other and then back again (not sure if there's a specific term for that) rather than in the round. I prefer it even though I have to sew up the seam afterwards. Leaving a gap for my thumb to go through.

I've never tried knitting socks, but I imagine they're best done in the round. Seams would be uncomfortable.

Oh yes, I just measured mine, and my wrists are7 inches. /O\
I've never come across any sock or glove patterns that were not done in the round, and I don't think that'd be sensible, either; not only would a seam be uncomfortable but you'll lose all the elasticity you need for the sock to stay up. I used to do sweater cuffs in the round as well when I wanted elastic cuffs - I haven't done a sweater or cardigan in ages, but the last ones were with unelastic cuffs intentionally. Knitting socks is fun and rathe reasy once you get the hang of it, but the learning process is intimidating to a lot of people, probably because it's difficult to learen from a written description or pattern. Even with YT videos it's not as easy with the classic patterin (where you get the 3D-shaped heel part), although there are patterns around which are easier to do learn also by video. I was lucky to learn it from my mother, and have taught it to a friend or two myself.

See? My wrists are like sticks; it's genetic, my mum had thin arms too.

I've seen some glove patterns where the main part is done side to side rather than in the round, but it wouldn't work with the fingers. I've knitted gloves before and the fingers are so fiddly.

I don't doubt I could knit socks if I tried, I can figure out pretty much any pattern and I have some sock patterns that belonged to my aunt, I've just never felt inspired to. There are so many sweater and cardigan patterns I want to try, and I used to knit baby clothes a lot, first for my sister, then for friends, and then for a shop, which sadly went out of business (not because of my knitting). Maybe I'll give it a go someday, although I think I gave away the sock wool I had. It was all grey anyway, too boring. I'd have to get pretty colours =)

Yes, if you've knitted gloves you won't find sock patterns/knitting instructions difficult. I used to mainly knit sweaters and cardigans, as I also didn't have much use for socks as I prefer to walk barefoot myself and had enough socks from my mum. But my husband prefers to wear woolen, hand-knitted socks even in summer, and although my mother knits him a pair for every birthday he went trough store-bought ones in a speed I found shocking. Also, they weren't available in any but dull colours, but he prefers bright, so I started to knit socks for him. I also quickly realised he needs an adapted pattern as his calves are relatively wide, so regular-sized socks will slid down and he frays parts of the heels very quickly because they bunch a bit inside his shoes (I can't understand how that doesn't bother him, but he's autisitc and has some odd sensory habits, including not noticing things like that). I don't manage more than a pair or two a year, but by now he has enough that I can wait for a full laundry load until they need washing. *g*

Your husband is lucky to have two dedicated sock-knitters in his life!

That's the thing with a lot of manufactured and store bought clothing items; people don't come in standard sizes so it can be difficult to find things that fit comfortably. Feet and legs have their own individual shapes, and people's preferences vary too.
