It absolutely does! Personally, I've found writing reviews, commentaries and such also a kind of writing exercise I eventually profit from, for me mainly for their roundup/ synopsis qualities.

Day 29: 263 words of "Madame Park's Academy II" — had enough time that I could have written more, but was slowed down because I had to do research to add some new characters. (It's still work, but not work that adds to word count.)

Go you, that's excellent! *\O/* You do you, of course, but I strongly believe in everything counts that contributes to my writing, no matter in what fashion. I have long stretches of doing more drafting, editing, researching and whatnot than actual writing. I usually don't add this to my word count but keep track of the time if possible, and use a conversion I once established, for my own statistics, but also as it imporves my motivation and might help me over a bad writing stretch.

In case you're interested, the conversion is 1h = 1k words, gotten from a discussion about how to converse time to words during NaNoWriMo while rebelling, and this ratio was generally used. I made a few tests myself and find this is set rather low for me, for I easily write 1,5-2k in an hour when I'm in a flow. But as I sometimes also dither endlessly about phrasing, and never not need to look up words or check if I've got a lesser used meaning right, I prefer to set the ratio low to be as close as possible to my average writing speed.

I love the idea of converting time to words, but at the same time I don't know that I could actually do that. I feel like I really should develop that sort of flexibility, but I'm much too strict with myself to actually feel comfortable doing that yet. #goals

I have trouble accounting for research because I'm never sure where to draw the line between "doing research" and "screwing around on the internet learning new stuff for the hell of it." And they're both useful things, but I never feel like I'm actually doing enough "actually research." I need to learn to be more flexible with myself.

29th: I can't remember what I wrote yesterday, but I know I did work on my story. At minimum, I made notes in my notebook.
30th: 1746 words(!!) to complete a draft. I'll read it through and do some edits tomorrow, and hopefully be able to get it off to beta.

LOL that happens to me at times, too! I sometimes even have to think hard about what exactly I wrote, as at times I'm jumping between stories, and more recently even between fandoms. /o\
