Do you have any ritual to take stock of the past year, or create any kind of keepsake about it or so? I'm currently making photo calendars as gifts, including one for ourselves with our favourite moments of the year, and realise that the one for ourselves has become just such a keepsake, as we've kept them all so far.

Let us know if we missed you or if you didn't check in for a while, so we can add you. Of course joining the fun is possible at any point.

[personal profile] ysilme here: A couple of hundred words today for a blog entry, and some poking at a holiday drawer fic idea. Most of my creativity today went into making the photo calendars, which was fun.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: 766 for me today, close enough to my personal goal to be acceptable. RL has been busy lately--remote learning makes for more work than the in-person kind. *sighs*

Dec 8th - 900 words, a 500 word ficlet and a quadruple drabble.

Also much knitting on arm warmers. Both of this pair are up to 56 rows but I'll have to wait until there's decent daylight to decide which of three other balls of yarn to use for the upper half.

You are a knitting wonder, seriously! (I don't know how to knit, though I vaguely remember learning how to crochet when I was a kid, a skill I have long since lost to the mists of time.)

Thanks! Mum taught me when I was a kid, but I only really got into it when my sister was expecting her first baby. I figured if I was going to be an auntie I should make something for the baby. I knitted so much her mother in law got a bit annoyed that I was outdoing her contributions. I've ben knitting for 40 years now.

9th: 1620 words, and I made it to the end AT LAST! I've spent the afternoon making changes, adding in little plotpoints, etc, and tomorrow I'll print it out, read the whole thing through and try to make the OCs more distinctive. Then hopefully it will be fit for beta. But right now I'm just all WOOHOO! GO ME! *collapses* :D

Day 8: Words? Doing one of those banging an existing scene into better shape passes and progress was definitely made but... actually looking back at it I can pick out some of the places where new words were added so uh... somewhere in the 500 words range which is more than I thought. Plus words got deleted and moved and... yes. progress.

I do not have any taking-stock end of year rituals. My end of year rituals involve things like as much cleaning as I can and making sure all my small debts are paid, so more about preparing to start the new year fresh than about dwelling on the year that's ending.

Sometimes progress involves taking out more than we put in, doesn't it? Congrats for going through the work of it; sometimes, it can be really rewarding, but I often find, anyway, that it's tedious.

(Sorry for the very late reply, RL is unexpectedly crazy this year for me...)
That's certainly a good approach to the new year! To me it feels as if every year is passing even quicker than the one before now I've passed the half-century line, and the unpleasant memories of the past year seem to be more to the front of the memory, so I have a desire for positive memories, and an account of the good things that happened, to start with a more positive outlook into the new year.

No end-of-year rituals here, although I do sometimes fill out one of those end-of-year memes about my writing over the past year. Those often end up having some details about the larger year itself, what with the way life tends to affect what and how much I write.

[personal profile] ysilme: Hurrah, words and a new story idea!

[personal profile] sylvanwitch: I was wondering if remote working was increasing teachers' workloads; it seems to me you'd have to redo a greater proportion of your lesson plans than usual, if nothing else. I'm sorry to hear it's true. Yay on getting your words in, and enjoy your partial day off tomorrow! (And best of luck on actually getting to have it!)

Check-in: Went back to the new story idea at lunch, and got a few sentences in. A little frustrated it wasn't more, but it's been a draining day.

Thank you so much for the good thoughts. I did have a bit of time off, enough for a walk in the park, anyway, and it felt good to get out in the dripping woods. :-) (For sure, having to convert lessons is a time-sucking consequence of going remote. Having taught my courses for many years, I have very little prep, typically speaking, even when, as I often do, I have new activities and materials. Figuring out how to translate/transfer so much in a shorter time period has been frustrating and time-consuming. But, we're almost at the holiday break, so yay!)

I'm sorry you had a draining day, but I'm glad you got some words in anyway, and I hope today has brought you more energy and less drainage, so to speak. ;-)

Checking in, belatedly, for Days 6, 7, and 8, accomplishments in writing for putting together entries for the December posting exercise, adding and tweaking and then posting an exchange work on time, and mostly keeping myself going and busy in work and non work writing.

In not writing, accomplishments in completely revamping the media setup in the living room such that it all takes up less space and is more aesthetically pleasing, which involved hauling around furniture and screens and untangling the wire nest, only to recreate it in a different configuration. And I only had to move one piece of wall art.

I don't have any year end keepsakes or mementos. I do the talking exercise, and I probably have more photos now than I did before by virtue of my smartphone and tablet having a camera attached to them, but it's still a new concept for me to have the thought about wanting to keep memories, even in years where things may not have been perfect all the time.

...you know, I should just give up on the notion of daily check ins and consider doing them by weeks instead? +sighs deeply+

So I took days 4 and 5 off to head to the beach with the family, and wrote nary a word (ok, I tell a lie, I did send a bunch of work emails), but otherwise I've been hard at work on my Yuletide treat and a December challengefic. Challengefic is done at 3,000+ words; it needs to sit for a bit until betas are ready for it; treat has a lengthy outline and some words and I managed to google up an exciting bit of canon review, which has been very useful! Hopefully I make some headway on it tomorrow morning!

And I hope you both have been keeping well. It's been a while! Are you guys Yuletiding?

I am not a Yuletide person, though I always enjoy the excitement surrounding it for other folks. It's honestly one of those challenges that seems intimidating to me not because of deadlines, etc, but because--and this is going to sound stupid--I can't quite figure out the rules? I've sincerely tried on a few occasions on a couple of these regular, big fests, and they...just don't make sense to me? *shakes head* Anyway, I am enjoying the excitement vicariously. :-)

The beach sounds lovely--I'm imagining our cold and dreary lakeshores right now, and I'm quite sure that's NOT the environment you've been experiencing--and congratulate you on finishing your challenge fic. Enjoy the treat-writing!

I got to my writing way too late yesterday, but I managed to put together some paragraphs, adding around 100 words to my story. What's more, I thought up some very important worldbuilding & plot background details that I've really been needing, partly through listening to one of my favourite science podcasts that happened to have an episode that sparked ideas. I didn't get around to writing about any of those yet, but it's going to be useful!
