ysilme here: I was very tired when I sat down to write yesterday, aiming for an alibi sentence, but it still became 246 words of the new chapter. It was essentially rewriting and rephrasing parts I was already mostly satisfied with, so easy enough. ;op

sylvanwitch here: I looked over my "favorites" list on Duotrope to see what might be next for submissions and was reminded that I have to write a one-page synopsis of the weird western novella in order to submit it to a publisher in the UK (it was rejected by the publisher I'd originally written it for). I also added 270 words to "The Factory," which is nearing its conclusion.

Day 12: About 600 words, handwritten. Being in the office is a good thing, because apparently if I can't mess about on the internet when work is slow I will write fic in my notebook instead :P

CONGRATULATIONS on making your pledge word count! That's awesome! I am NOT going to make mine this year, barring some miraculous long work that emerges from my subconscious, but I'm okay with that because I've been doing so much editing, submitting, etc., which is also writing but not the word-producing kind. Still, NECESSARY, if I ever hope to be published, but I do miss sitting down and writing an epic-length fanfiction I hadn't intended to write. *sighs nostalgically*

Thank you! I only pledged 150k this year, down from my usual, but I wanted to allow more time for other things.

That's a shame, but you're still doing a lot of writing-related work, even if it's not producing many words. Maybe next year if your still doing editing you'd be better off with counting writing days instead of words.

There's always the chance of fanfic sneaking in of course, should inspiration hit. Fanfic is sneaky that way. ;)

Good luck with your editing and submitting! I hope you soon start getting things accepted for publication.

Day 12: Today I am grateful for fans who do all the work of collating references to things so that I can enter search terms and learn what places in a sprawling canon I need to revisit in order to do canon review. Also I have a rough idea of what I'm going to do with that story, probably, now that I've reminded myself of what was said in canon about the topic.

Jul 12: Today, thank goodness, I do not hate my story anymore. Still needs a chunk of work, sure, but whatever was happening last night seems to have passed. Celebrated by adding a little scene and having thoughts about what I'll need to add elsewhere to improve the whole. (Adding those things, however, is tomorrow's problem!)

I'm so glad to hear your feelings about the story didn't stick and it's feeling better - hopefully much more so by now, as I'm commenting belatedly. And thank you! But I'm afraid I have no idea what that reference means. ^^

Stone soup is a folk story about a beggar who sought a meal and a dry bed for the night from a miser. Initially the miser was having no part of it -- he did not want to open his larder to a random beggar! Did this beggar think the miser had food to spare, that he could give it away to anyone who asked for it?? But then the beggar said that he wasn't asking for food! All he needed was a soup pot and a fire to put it on, because he possessed a magic soup stone, which if added to boiling water, would make the most delicious soup the miser had ever tasted! In fact, the beggar would be happy to share his magical stone soup in return for a dry place to sleep for the night!

Well, this man being a miser, he was always interested in getting something for nothing, so he bade the miser to come in and make him some soup.

So the beggar did. He set the stone to boil, all the while talking about how wonderful the soup was going to be. The miser hung on his every word and watched very closely, eager to taste this miraculous soup.

"But you know what would make this soup really good?" asked the beggar. "A carrot! If only we had a carrot, then you would really see how amazing this soup can be! The soup is very good without it, of course, a carrot is in no way necessary! But one time I had a carrot to put in it, and my goodness! You have never tasted such soup!"

Well, the miser was perhaps able to spare a carrot...

And so it went, the beggar talking up his wonderful soup made from just a single stone, and meanwhile wheedling out of the miser a marrow bone, an onion, some potatoes, some bay leaves...

Finally the soup was finished. The miser was very impressed. It was so tasty! And to think, it was made with just a single stone!

Of course the miser couldn't leave it at that, just give the beggar a bed and send him on his way in the morning! No, he must have this wonderful stone for himself! This wonderful stone that made soup out of nothing!

The beggar did not like to part with his stone, as it was the last thing he had from his mother, but finally he consented to sell it to the miser and left the house poorer a magic soup stone, but with a tidy little bag of coins in his pocket.

Of course, as so often happens, the day came when he had spent all the coins and he found himself destitute again. Hungry and seeking a bed for the night, he spied a handsome stone by the side of the road...

It's one of my favorite folk stories.

Anyway, in this analogy, my brain would be the miser insisting that it has no words! No words! And certainly none to spare for my story, no, no! While my craftier Write Every Day self is the beggar, insisting that we don't need any words, no one is asking anyone to write, of course not! But I just happen to have this lovely magical stone alibi sentence here! We'll just put that down and call it quits -- but you know what would make this alibi sentence especially wonderful...?
