"A work in progress quickly becomes feral. It reverts to a wild state overnight. It is barely domesticated, a mustang on which you one day fastened a halter, but which now you cannot catch." (Annie Dillard)

~ ~ ~

[personal profile] ysilme here: My eldest niece has just finished her Abitur and is backpacking in Sweden for a month. This morning she sent an emergency request for instructions and recipes for simple & vegetarian youth hostel cooking, and I ended up typing 2,3k of a basic backpacking cookbook for her. ^^

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: I drew another folklore oracle card today and wrote 400 words, about two-thirds story and one-third notes for the rest of the story and questions I might need to answer to get to the rest of the story. I *really* like it so far, however, so fingers crossed that tomorrow's eyes see today's loveliness.

Mm, I suspect I have several dangerously feral WiPs...

[personal profile] ysilme, you are truly a devoted aunt!

July 11th - 517 words finishing my two challenge fics, the first of which is posted. Amusingly (to me at least), that brings this year's wordcount to 178178 =D

LOL Welcome to the anonymous writing zookepers! Congrats to the wordcount and the cool annual wordcount number! *\O/*
And thank you! *blush* I'm having a very close relation to my eldest and middle niece (sisters), and I've always been their to-go person for pratical advice in various areas, which I'm really honoured about.

[personal profile] ysilme: That sounds like a completely different genre of recipe than what I would call a backpacking cookbook! But very cool, and I hope she gets good use out of it.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch: Yay for a story start you like! May it remain so!

Jul 11: I am absolutely fucking bushed (I've been having trouble sleeping in because of the heat and the early sunrises), but I did noodle around with some sentences earlier, so at least that's one thing done with.

Oh dear, sorry to hear that! *hugs* Go you for making writing happening even so!

Thank you! I gave her a German backpacking cookbook for her trip which is based on a vlog (her English isn't up to that yet, leaving measurement conversion and brand food item names aside), but it turns out nothing what's available is really useful to her, either because they're meant for having your own cooking equipment incl. camping stove, or travelling in Central or Southern Europe which is a whole different thing as far as food availability and prices goes, or needing a degree of cooking experience she's not yet having. She turned vegetarian a few years ago and started to learn cooking back then, but she hasn't ever cooked in anything but a really well-equipped kitchen with all the pots and ustensils available she could wish for, and many of the dishes and recipes she's familiar with need ingredients you won't find in Sweden and can't replace, or need more equipment than she's finding in the youth hostel. It boils down to what can you cook for one person when you have either just one small pot and limited stove time and/or a hot water kettle available, don't want to waste any food, can't refrigerate, have very limited fridge space and limited money, too. *g*

In my context, I would have said backpacking food is food you have to carry on your back for a week or more, lightweight, shelf-stable, only needs water and/or a quick boil to reconstitute (because fuel is heavy to carry, too!). Which is more about preparation ahead of time, drying stews and things to reconstitute later, and less about, you know, cooking.

This sounds like a very handy cookbook you've put together for her, and I hope it makes mealtimes significantly easier for her!

Ugh, that sucks, re: sleep. I tossed and turned for what felt like hours last night, though my cause was self-induced (namely, reading an ebook instead of putting it down for a physical book at least a half-hour before bedtime--rookie move, me). Anyway, I do hope you got some good sleep last night and are feeling more energetic today. (I would wish you cooler weather, but that seems cruel, given all the variables.)

I've been writing pretty consistently, but apparently not reporting my writing. I wrote on days 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 (not on day 5). I just finished and posted a chapter of one of my interlinked K-pop omegaverse UA fics, leaving the reader at a cliffhanger that will be resolved in the next chapter of the other fic. (I had started an omegaverse AU fic about Twice, then about 30 chapters in, one of the members of Twice bonded with one of the members of Itzy, so I started a second fic whose chapters are interleaved with the first fic in order to address my Itzy-centric plotlines without derailing the original fic.)

Thank you for saying this! ♥ It's the same for many of us. Personally I attribute it to WED to have developed a solid writing habit over the years, and went from struggling to even write 100 words every single day (my personal goal back then) to easily writing 2k on average for months on end.

From: [personal profile] brithistorian
2K? Wow! I currently write almost every day and I'm averaging 770 words/day. In the time I've been in WED, I've noticed that it helps me to produce something on the days where I'm not sure what happens next and the characters are being uncommunicative. Having that sense of public accountability helps me to put in the effort to write an alibi sentence, which generally leads to a second sentence and my bad days end up being a little bit better than they might have been.

I always have a lot of plates spinning - I have trouble resisting a new story, and then once I start it, it inevitably grows out of control. The story mentioned above was intended to be "just a little side story," and it's now grown to 45 chapters totalling 79K words!

I am getting SO much inspiration out of it, and since I'm treating each story as an exercise, there's no pressure to "do well" or "make it marketable" or whatever, and I'm finding that SO freeing.

YAY for so many words and SO MUCH TIME revising! May you find a way to lasso that story into some semblance of order. :-)

I know, right? It's really a skill that'll come handy all the time. Niece wasn't very interested in cooking in general until she turned vegetarian, and now her main motivator is sustainability and the desire to go as plastic free as possible without waisting things, which I find highly laudable. But for that she needs to get some skills and experience she hasn't yet, and I have an inkling that her travelling will considerable contribute to that! *g*
