[personal profile] ysilme here: 1,3k for the NP for day 12, translating one of my old stories into English, and a few hundred of nonfic.

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: I spent much of Day 12 dreading a wake we had to attend this evening, which turned out to be fine (I mean, yes, sad, as the wake was for a friend, but not dread-worthy--thanks social anxiety!) AND we got to have dinner with an old friend we hadn't seen in a long time, so that was lovely and apropos, given that we hadn't seen the deceased in a long while either and had been wishing we'd made the effort for her. Anyway, despite the dread, I managed to add 335 words to the latest folklore oracle deck story, this one about The Norns.

Thank you! I nearly left the challenge fic to finish today, but I was making notes while doing some cross stitch and decided I'd better finish while the ideas were there.

Sorry to hear about the wake you had to go to, but it's good that you were able to renew connections with another friend you hadn't seen in a while. Take care of yourself.

I wrote 467 words today, resolving the cliffhanger I set up last night. I probably could have written more, but I'd written just up to a major sex scene and I knew I didn't have it in me to write the whole thing tonight, so I thought it better not to start. (These two characters have had sex before, but this will be their first time having sex as a bonded alpha-omega pair, so it's got to be something special.)

Thank you so much. I'm feeling much more grounded today.

I know what you mean about the point at which you chose to leave off writing. I've had similar instincts where certain sex scenes are concerned. Some can be left in medias res, but special ones need to be written all at once.

My instinct about writing this turned out to be right. Typically my sex scenes, like my fight scenes, are very mechanically oriented: I keep careful track of who's got which body part where, because it really bugs me when authors screw that up. But for this scene, a more impressionistic approach ended up working better, and I don't think I would have hit upon that if I hadn't written the whole scene in one go.

[personal profile] ysilme: Hurrah, back to the nostalgia project! I hope you enjoyed it!

[personal profile] sylvanwitch: I totally understand about social anxiety before a funeral/wake/memorial -- I have put a LOT of pressure on myself beforehand to behave "right", whatever that means, at such events. Which is completely different from my experience of the events themselves. I don't want to say that anything goes at a funeral, and yet... dunno, there's enough emotion in the room that there's a certain... allowance? forgiveness? expectation? of behavior that's outside of the usual norm. Enough so, anyway, that awkwardness is overlooked or treated compassionately, instead of judgementally. At least that's been my experience.

In any case, I'm glad the wake was good, and that you got to see people. And that you ALSO managed to get words in.

Jul 12: some sentences. This vignette isn't gelling; I might have to toss the idea and try something else. But that's tomorrow's problem, not today's.

You created words, that's all that counts, go you! Crossed fingers they'll be more cooperative today. :o)
Actually, I don't enjoy the current task much; I'm doing it more as a kind of exercise while I'm pondering what to properly tackle next. It's a very cringeworthy early fanfic of one of the less well-written series (Kelso), and I set myself the task to translate something as well as work at something I'm not partiuclarly fond of, to get more experience in dealing with parts I might not like but need to tackle or so. *g* What I am enjoying is that my vocabulary has really improved with working at the NP, also the naval one, and I'm quite proud that I have to look up only the occasional term by now.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It's as you say here. In this case, my friend had an enormous, raucous family whom I'd never met, so the room where she was laid out was so full of people exchanging happy stories about my friend that we were practically invisible, and even though there was a little hiccup with where the line for going to the casket started, we all managed to laugh about it and just get on with the praying, etc. And then the bonus of getting to have dinner with a mutual friend of ours and the departed's, so we could catch up with one another and also wake our friend with a meal...that was unexpected and very nice.

I'm sorry you're having difficulty with the vignette. I hope today sees that struggle resolved, but I appreciate that you're willing to put it aside if it's just not working. I'm sending you an ease-of-words vibe for the day!

Heh, that's a good way to approach that - and an awesome word count to show for it! *\O/*

It is, altough I confess it's not 100% just translation, some parts I'm also always rewriting when doing this with my own stories. I started my way into published fanfic with translating from English to German, and sometime later, when I started to also write in English, translated/transferred some of my stories also into English. I find the process really fascinating and love to get the original in the best translated version I possibly can, but it's definitely a challenge, no less if it's your own text. *g* Looking back, translator would've been the perfet job for me, but I never even considered it given how poor my English teacher's opinion was of my language abilites in general and in English in particular. One of my last Englishs teacher suggested I should find a profession where I wouldn't need English. XD

All the sympathies about the wake, and even more so for the social anxiety involved! ***hugs*** I'm glad it turned out to be fine, considering. It often happens that you'll meet people you haven't seen or met for a while or a long time, and TBH I think that's one of the definitve silver linings of wakes or funerals.
Go you for managing to write even so, that's awesome! *\O/* ♥

Thank you so much, my friend. One of my least favorite things about social anxiety is the way that my rational mind KNOWS that my catastrophizing is ridiculous but my anxiety isn't interested in being rational at all. ;-) Big *hugs* to you, my friend!
