March 23rd - 1251 words, a challenge fic and some editing on a fic for posting. I thought I was writing a double drabble for the challenge, but my characters had other ideas and I wound up with over 1.2k instead. Not complaining though =)

Indeed, thanks! :o) Yay right back for yours! I've been meaning to ask, is your daily word count the exact number you're writing or a routinely set approximation? I'm just curious. I haven't worked with a continuous minimum word count myself yet except during November; I've participated at NaNoWriMo for about ten years now. In the last years I've set mysef a daily word count of 2k for that and found that after a time, I'm always reaching a natural break around 2k during that time, although I'm always writing a bit over.

Honestly...it's generally rounded down to the nearest 100.

I used to write 2,000 words per working day, but did not write every day. I'm currently writing almost every day as an experiment, but with a lower wordcount goal of 1,000 to 1,500 words. (I missed a couple days in February because I had to go to the ER and then recover.) I personally cannot sustain more than 2,000 words/day for any length of time because my brain runs out of juice. I can very rarely sprint up to 8,000 words in a day, especially at the end of a project when I just want the thing off my desk, but that is absolutely not sustainable for me. I'm so fascinated by individual variation here! My friend Seth Dickinson's rhythm is totally different from mine - he'll spend like several months writing 8,000 words every day and then six months writing absolutely nothing while he recuperates. XD

Oh, I definitely couldn't keep up with writing 2k daily/every working day for any longer stretch; the only time this is working is during NaNoWriMo, and then also only because I might have a new project (or drawerfic) that is creating its own momentum, and it also only works until I've reached the magical 50k. But I need a lot of breathing space afterwards, and after this has worked for me for a few years I realised last time I can't do it any longer, and need to get a better routine with break days, likely also as I'm getting older and my focus and energy run out much quicker. I don't think I could do even 1k on every work day for more than a week or two in succession at that - there's always something happening that demands too much energy, time or leisure, no matter how hard I work at establishing a regular, job-like writing routine. I aim for getting published but am mostly writing transformative fiction so far, as during the last few years there've been a lot of things happening that kept me from properly continuing with my original WIPs, so instead of working at them I'm at least aiming at creating a much better working routine while doing "easier" things (relatively speaking; I'm taking my transformative writing and even my drawerfic seriously, also to train myself).
Kudos for the occasional springt up to 8k! I can do up to 6k, I think - also only very occasionally; and a few times I managed to conceive and write a full pinch-hit for a fic exchange in one day but with a much lower word-count. I totally share your fascination about this variation, and I'm in total awe of people who manage a really large output even on a regular basis.
Here's to finding out what is sustainable for us individually, and getting a good balance of outbut versus writing joy! :o)
