ysilme here: No more fiction for me yesterday than that alibi sentence, although I wrote about 300 words of non fic on top. Today, I haven't managed much so far either, but I looked a few things up necessary for my current WIP, and shifted around a few parts in an older fic as well as added about 250 new words there.

sylvanwitch here: I got through 24 essays today, which means I have 79 more to grade. I'm going to try to get them done tomorrow, so I can have a three-day weekend free and clear. We'll see. It's really tedious work, especially with essays that are illegibly written. Anyway, I just wrote the first 457 words of the third part of the MPI series I'm unexpectedly writing.

I wrote fiction on the 12th and on the 14th I wrote a huge note on Facebook informing all my friends of a big life announcement (I got a new job and I'm sort-of moving towns). On the 15th I wrote a journal entry here about that same thing, though much shorter.

Today (the 16th) so far...responding to comments here on DW. Going to try to get a poem out before the end of the day. Possibly more, but we'll see.

426 words. Not sure if it's actually a scene or background information. Since I started getting back to this thing, the antagonist has become less of a caricature, but in starting to provide him with motivations, his aims seem to have shifted a bit. This is not necessarily helpful but I'm letting it play out for now, since where things were originally going didn't work out either.

I find that in those liminal spaces, the characters often evolve in ways I couldn't have imagined. In those moments, I can see how people once attributed such inspiration to an external force or being (e.g. a Muse) because honestly, it's MY brain, in theory, but I'd've sworn that wasn't in there. ;-)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the journey it's taking you on and that it arrives at a place where you can continue the work in new and surprising ways. :-)

Day 17: I had to go to my sister's place to let the plumber in and ended up being there all morning, which worked out great! Very few distractions (except the plumber)! I wrote an email in Korean, and then went back to the beginning of my stupid Time Travel fic and started tightening the POV. Came home finished the first chapter, adding 1,051 words in all. (I would have stopped over an hour ago, but I wanted to check in with over 1000 words, given how recalcitrant this fic has been lately!) I still don't quite know where it's going, but having the tighter POV means I'm more interested in finding out. So. *fingers crossed*

LOL Thank you! To be honest most of it was procrastination to avoid writing prose for the current WIP, and everything was pretty short anyway. But as we all keep saying here, words are words and alibi sentences are a thing - it DOES make a difference even to have just done this little bit. *g*
Kudos to your awesome word count and writing output, too! It's always great if you can work without distractions, isn't it? For me this works particularly well if it's a kind of unexpected or unusual distraction-free environment, like your plumber situation.

Re: Handwritten essays: These were part of their midterm (high school) exams, and we still roll the old-fashioned way where exams are concerned (*sighs extra-heavily*), so that means lined "Blue Books" and the whole schtick. It's awful. I HATE grading handwritten essays.

Otherwise, during the regular year, students are required to type all of their essays. They might not be much better written, but at least they're legible--lol!

EXCELLENT progress! Yay! That's a great word count, and I love that you were so motivated to get to it. Also, YAY for doing the fidgety editing work that makes thinks work. Yay!

This seems to become a theme for you. I salute you for writing as much in longhand in a moving vehicle, I can't imagine this is easily done! I sometimes write on my phone while in the car (not driving, of course) or having to wait somewhere, but unless I can sit at a table and use a bluetooth keyboard, this is quite the slow process. Still works well for jotting down some keywords, though.

Moving vehicle: the problem isn't the writing so much, as the transcribing later. ;-) But yeah, morning bus time seems to work reasonably well for my brain, which is nice. And I feel like I've probably made some forward progress on this story? Maybe? We'll see when I sit down to transcribe it all...

Finally, thank you. I HATE grading exam essays. The majority of us want to do away with midterm exams and move to project-based assessment, but our admin is old-school and controlling, so... *sighs*

Had a kind of a busy day, but I worked a bit more on the short story in the evening. Just a few more sentences added to the actual story, because I thought up some things about characters and worked on the character sheets I've got and then got lost looking for references photos for one of the characters. (Somehow it morphed into ogling at fan art for one of my favourite podcasts, which no longer had anything to do with the story. The hazards of research.)

*grins* Ah, the rabbithole of the internet claimed another victim. I can well relate. And, you know, a little healthy ogling isn't a bad thing. ;-)

Anyway, words were made, and that's what matters. YAY!

Day 16 - Amazingly, despite all the going out yesterday, I managed 1260 words, including 861 on the new WiP. The rest was another pass on one of the WiPs from a few days ago, which I think is now done aside from a final check for typos, and some editing on one of the fics I posted last night.

Haven't started my Day 17 writing yet, only just turned the computer on, so here's hoping the bunnies and muses cooperate.

I've continued a bit yesterday also with the exchange WIP, and added a bit to a drawer fic WIP for comfort. 624 words alltogether, and about half an hour of editing on top.

More sympathies about poorly written essays!
Speaking of that, I'm sometimes shocked when I see the spelling of my eldest niece. She had the misfortune to be in a curriculum experiment in her first four school years. They believed it was a good idea to let students learn writing and spelling not by properly learning to spell the words, but by listening comprehension. It's been deemed more important that they wrote freely without "being hampered by mistakes in spelling". It didn't really work out that way, most students had difficulties to read their own spelling a year later, and all of them have serious problems now and are unable to write without mistakes at all, even those at the top of the class - in eight grade! (We count from year 1 upwards, 4 years of elemnentary school and then "high school" until exams, so she's now in her fourth "High school" year.) And she's a voracious reader, writes herself, and learns very easily. This also influences her average, as she has top marks in every class except German, where she's sometimes struggling to get an average - of course the current curriculum also doesn't take this into consideration. *fury*

Thank you, I am, and I also have my voice nearly back. Thankfully also well enough to attend to a much coveted class tomorrow afternoon to learn how to properly prune our fruit trees, which is only offered once a year and places are difficult to get.

We had a similar curriculum for English in the 1970s here, and I fell victim to it. It was called "whole language learning," and we were encouraged to just write, etc. We did learn spelling, but grammatical constructions were ignored. Because I was a reader like your niece, I learned proper constructions, but to this day (and I'm an English teacher), I can't always tell you the *names* of parts of speech. I mean, I know nouns, verbs, etc., but I can't look at an appositive and say, "Oh, that's an appositive." I have to look that stuff up. Thankfully, it doesn't impact my actual work as a teacher much, since I still know when something is incorrect and how to instruct the students to fix what's wrong with their writing, but there are times when I'm forced to admit that I don't know how to diagram a sentence, and then I get Looks. ;-)

All of this is to stay that I appreciate your fury on your niece's behalf, and I'm sorry that she fell victim to this 'system' of learning. That stinks!

"Too many other things" is the bane of all our existences, I think. I imagine it as this sort of hulking, shadowy creature that ghosts its fingers down our backs and tweaks are ears to draw our attention away. *grins*
