Thank you all for your replies to my request, they're most welcome! I'll get back to them a bit later; I've invited my parents for tea and forgot the house is a mess, so there's a bit of emergency cleaning ahead. ;op Day 16: wrote seven? or so reviews, added a word or two to yesterday's bingo fill draft while mulling it over, got the beta back for chapter 3/5 of the WIP, put in the edits, and posted it, and went through the prompts of Scribbles & Drabbles again to choose the ones I'd like to claim.

sylvanwitch here: I wrote and submitted an exactly 50-word story on the theme of "treasure chest" to the Scottish Book Trust, which hosts a monthly competition. I found it via my weekly Duotrope themed deadlines email and thought it sounded like fun. My focus has been on professional-rate SFWA-qualified publications for several months now, but since I just finished "The Factory" in draft, I thought I deserved a treat. I have little chance of winning (the prize is a mug), but it feels awfully nice to just play around with words a bit.

July 17th - 700 words, a 500 word challenge ficlet and a double drabble.

That's it, I've managed to catch up with challenges in time for the new ones next week! Now I'm off outside in the garden to potter about for a bit. It's probably the last chance I'll have for 3 days, 2 very hot and the third set to be stormy and wet.

YAY for catching up and for so many words! That's fabulous! Also, happy pottering! It's hot and humid out there in my gardens today, so I watered before the sun got out into them, and even then, I was dripping myself by the time I got to my morning coffee.

It was too hot to stay out for long, even in the shade. Been for a stroll around the garden now it's a bit cooler - the breeze helps - but staying in tomorrow is going to be easy if it's hotter than today.

My family conflict is resolved! \o/

On the 17th, I started on chapter 12 of my longfic and wrote 500 words, total wordcount 55,900. But now my sister's family has arrived, with two small kids, so let's see how much writing I get done during the following days...

Day 17 - made a little more progress on the never ending outline. I’ve decided that it’s ok if this doesn’t end up being good. The more important thing is that it ends up being finished.

I've always been fond of "Great is the enemy of done," or any variation on that theme, which this perfectionist A-type learned the hard way when she was put in charge of an accreditation process. Glad to say I learned the lesson that was beaten into me, though. ;-) Anyway, this is to say that I'm happy for you that you are finding your way to the words for this story!

I fully agree; sometimes things just need to be finished, no matter if we're satisfied with them or not. My current WIP is the same; I need to finish it but by now don't care any longer that I could and perhaps should've put in much more effort to make it better. *sympathies* I'm also convinced we're profiting also from such works; it can't always all be roses and violets, after all!

Yes, for sure. I've only been submitting to pro-rates because of the SFWA requirements, and when I filter for payrate, it certainly cuts down the number of venues available for submissions.

are you using duotrope for these searches

I am using Duotrope, though there's a monthly Twitter post of SFWA-approved submissions venues as well, and I think you can just go to the SFWA to look at their submissions calls too, if I'm remembering right. Mostly, I've been using Duotrope, and a lot of times it'll say right on the Duotrope page for a publication that they are SFWA-approved. (Sometimes, you have to dig around at the publication's own website for that info., of course, and I always end up on individual submissions guidelines pages anyway.)

I stopped caring about the SFWA years and years ago but the nice thing about having a venue with their approval is you know you're likely to actually get paid.

Ugh, how long have I been away? Fine. Checking in for Days 11-17, signing up for things, working in assignments, doing weekly posts, all of those things and more. Plenty of writing done, but apparently I don't remember to come by and check in regularly any more.

Sometimes, going back through and fixing things is all I have the focus/will for sometimes, and usually doing that will function to develop my urge to carry on the next time I sit down to write, though not always. *hugs* Sending you ALL the word energy!
