"In conversation you can use timing, a look, inflection, pauses. But on the page all you have is commas, dashes, the amount of syllables in a word. When I write I read everything out loud to get the right rhythm.” Fran Lebowitz

Let us know if we missed you or if you didn't check in for a while, so we can add you. Of course joining the fun is possible at any point.

ysilme here: pondered more plot ideas and wrote several reviews as well as and 73 words on that last chapter on day 18. Also spent an unreasonably long time on creating an icon from a html table to get a certain grid look... *g* Today's quote was chosen by
sylvanwitch, the image is by me.
sylvanwitch here: Another VERY full day of adulting ahead *sighs*, so I made a point to get 330 words in on the new flashfic before we had to leave for our first big errand.

Date: 2022-07-19 05:25 pm (UTC)I spent the afternoon reading and doing some colouring. Temperature is down from 39C to 35C, it's cloudy out, so the end of the heatwave is in sight. Normal temperatures are going to seem cold after this!

Date: 2022-07-20 07:58 am (UTC)20th: I finally sat down late this afternoon (after washing a mountain of dishes) and wrote 1,313 words on my phone, using my bluetooth keyboard. (Writing on my phone tends to be rougher -- I don't edit as much as I go -- and it's easier to shut out distractions like Twitter, etc. So it's a good way to make progress when I haven't been getting anywhere at my regular desktop keyboard.)

Date: 2022-07-20 04:35 pm (UTC)Next, I am IN AWE that you can write on your phone! (I don't have a phone, but I do have an iPad, and while I do sometimes write on it, it's more of a challenge than it's worth for me.)
Finally: YAY for so many words! That's an awesome wordcount! Go, you!

Date: 2022-07-21 09:49 pm (UTC)Anyway, the Logitech one works pretty well for me except that [Shift]+[Space] changes language layouts, so I keep accidentally changing to Korean (which is the other keyboard I use) and having to go back and rewrite a word or two. [Shift]+[Space] is a terrible combo for changing anything!

Date: 2022-07-21 12:40 pm (UTC)But in regard to distraction I've really come to appreciate a feature of scrivener - I hope I'm not annyoing you with mentioning it again, that's really not my intention! But what sometimes bothers me is even the distraction by the menus of software or an app, for lack of better description; it feels as what I'd really need or want at such times are the clean pages of a notebook or so. Using the full screen option of scrivener is giving me that impression/feeling, though, as it gives you just the writing window with nothing else. You can either go fully wide, or - what I prefer - to narrow the writing window to a size similar to a book page, as this seems to make a difference for me. The background can be adapted to anything between fully visible and fully blackened out; I like to have the rest shine through a bit to give me the impression of a notebook lying on a desk full of things. ^^ Anything important can be easily reached by hovering the mouse on the bottom to have a menu pop up, or with one key to get back to the regular screen. This is what it looks like.
I'm really happy there are so many practical things out there, hard- and software-wise, which help us to find what works best for each of us! :o) I'm forever in awe of the effort it's been to write either just longhand before typewriters came into being, or using typewriters without any correction options. It's so much easier, technically-speaking, to cut, copy, paste, replace, search and whatnot... I learned typing on a mechanical typewriter, and my first years of storywriting were done first as longhand in notebooks, and later typed with that typewriter. My main issue was that my fingers/hands were always so much slower than my thoughts ran! *ggg* And editing or correcting - ugh. Not funny. XD

Date: 2022-07-21 10:04 pm (UTC)Brains can be so picky, can't they? :-) I don't even use an app (though I could use Google docs, I guess?) -- I just write things in a draft email. This has the bonus advantage of making it harder to check my email while I'm writing, and it autosaves, which is all I really need. ;-)
I have another Scrivener-using friend who mentioned the full-screen feature to me, and since then, I've been using Word in full screen. It doesn't block out the menus, but it does hide everything else on my desktop, which I like, and it means there's room for my outline (such as it is) in the Navigation pane down the left. (The sticking point for me with Scrivener was that the word processor has different keyboard commands and behaves slightly differently from Word, and I'm so change resistant and have been using Word for soooo loooong that I just couldn't stand it. But maybe I'll give it another try sometime...)
I'm forever in awe of the effort it's been to write either just longhand before typewriters came into being, or using typewriters without any correction options.
Ahh, I know! I used to write on a typewriter, too, when I was a teenager. I guess it was slow enough to allow me to organise my thoughts as I went? And I was maybe less prescriptive about how things should be. I think the ability to edit as we go has made me, at least, someone who compulsively does that! ♥
