ysilme here: 1,5k for the NP on day 20, not for one of the things I was fiddling with but fleshing out a scene on a WIP I'd put aside. *g*

sylvanwitch here: I just realized I never checked in for Day 21. I wrote 332 words of comfort fanfic but did not finish the ficlet.

Jul 21: Took a mallet to all the [[...]] placeholders in my draft, and got quite a lot of them before I called it quits to work on other things. Also added three more columns to my spreadsheet, did a bunch more arithmetic, and started working out how the frick I'm going to format this on AO3.

Yay for tearing down all those placeholders - probably tedious work but it's so satisfying when it's getting done, isn't it? I have the highest respect, too - I find it very hard to write with placeholders; mostly this rather paralyses me, and I tend to spend an obsessive amount of time of finding the right name even for totally unimportant NPCs. /o\

Sadly, I was having to name another new character every three hundred words or so -- all of whom would never be mentioned again! And then there were the bars, and newspapers, and book titles, once again every three hundred word or so... I would have gotten absolutely nothing done, without placeholders! Better to leave all the fiddly clever naming stuff for a batch job, when I had all my lists and rhyming dictionaries and whatnot open, rather than come to a dead halt every couple of paragraphs -- or worse, every couple of sentences!

Day 21: Working on remixing a past fic.

I'm remixing a 64-chapter longfic from 3rd person limited omniscient to 1st person. I say remixing rather than revising because I have both versions available. When I start remixing a chapter, I have to go through and edit the spacing and punctuation, because at the time I wrote the earlier version I was still putting 2 spaces after periods and using hyphens for dashes. Once I finished that, I finish that, I copy everything over into a new file and start the remixing. That's what I was doing tonight. Plus, in the process of getting the next chapter ready to remix, I noticed that I'd referred to a character's hair at one point in the story as platinum blonde when it really wasn't that shade of blonde. So off I go, down the rabbit hole of shades of blonde. As near as I can tell, it's either a slightly dark vintage blonde or a very light creamy blonde. I ended up calling it vintage. So progress today, but no word count. (For the remix chapters, I can't do a daily word count, but just count the length of the chapter on the day I finish and post it — I figure that even the words that didn't get changed from the original still got thought about, so I still count them.)

You absolutely may calculate your word counts however works best for you, believe me! :-) And that is a TON of work, even if not all the words are getting changed. Go, you! YAY!

Thank you, and back to you! I can imagine how difficult it is to count words on a remix or such. And what counts for "new" words is totally up to you, of course! I find your method very reasonable; it would be absurd if only words that hadn't been written and thought about before would count for the writing of the day!
I'm using various methods myself if I'm not writing new text; if I'm mainly editing I use a time-to-words conversion - I did that first when I wrote a NaNoWriMo as a rebel with lots of editing. I found my own average ratio by taking the time when I wrote and comparing that to the words I produced - for me, it's 1k words per hour. I usually write a lot more but wanted to allow also for the phases when I'm looking something up or need to think about something. My usual writing wort after the very first draft is re-writing passages or whole chapters, as this seems to be easiest for me to get the desired result, although it's somewhat time-consuming. But in these cases I'm counting the words I'm writing, no matter if I just retype a part of them: but I might retype them three or four times until I'm satisfied in the given session, and in the process I'm also thinking about how to phrase something an so on.

*hugs you back hard* Yeah, it was A Day, for sure. I'm feeling cautiously optimistic now, but for a while there, it was a real burden to have such an imagination and also to have read so much dystopian fiction. ;-)
