ysilme here: 375 on a drawer fic. Not the one I should be working on, but at least it's fic.

sylvanwitch here: Today ended up being productive, but most of it didn't involve writing. For example, I learned how to deploy my robot vacuum, which I've quite unoriginally named Roby. Roby did a great job sweeping the floors, and then it did a good job mopping the master bathroom and kitchen, as well. (It's a wet-dry vac, in case you were wondering.) Anyway, between one chore and another, I added 561 words to the weird western, working title "Snake Riders." (Oh, and I finished planting, mulching, and fencing the last new garden of the year. YAY!)

Ugh, I hear you. It's unseasonable where I am (western New York State) but nowhere near as bad as in the Pacific Northwest. I hope you're able to keep hydrated and as cool as you can. When the entire atmosphere is out to kill you, that's got to be scary.

Two paragraphs of the ending of a fic for today. (Not finished- it's one of those things that has a beginning and an end with no middle)

YAY! YAY for an ending! Now, for the middle, I'm curious: Do you work chronologically, so to speak, from here on out, starting after the beginning and working toward your completed ending? Or do you jump around or work backwards? Just curious, please feel no pressure to respond. :-)

I guess "jump around" would be the best way to put it, but it's more like I start with a concept and then think of how that concept could change or be flipped around. I like to make sure the ending is something fitting and satisfying/meaningful. That helps me get at the tone of the story, and plan the direction it might take.

Some days, we just have to write what calls to us, even if it's not what we're "supposed" to be doing. That happened to me today, too. :-) *hugs*

More heat wave today, breaking yesterday's record, which broke the day before's. (But the heat has broken! Just now! The temp dropped twenty degrees in ninety minutes HOORAY!) But I did get some writing done before I got heat-stupid: mostly just an expansion and improvement of the scene I wrote yesterday, but it counts and I'm also pleased with it.

So, right now, there are a lot of bracketed, all-caps things in my story like [NAME OF MILITARY] [RANK], etc., because I began this as a lark with zero backstory and now I have a roughly drawn map and a whole damned military hierarchy to create (probably based on a church structure, I'm thinking), never mind the bad guys, who are not actually human and who therefore require an origin story of some sort. *sighs* In my head it's Aliens v. Cowboys meets Charlaine Harris' "Gunnie Rose" series by way of Upright Women Wanted. Or something. And listen to me go off... You can see why I'm more interested in working on THIS than on the compulsory getting-published stuff, right?

Anyway, YAY for the break in the heatwave! That's SO great! I mean, it's awful that you're having it at all, and I can't help but feel, as someone who briefly majored in environmental politics in undergrad in the nineties, that doom is a'knockin', but hey, the heat has broken! YAY!

Also, Wooo-hoooo for new words and for being pleased with them!

I jotted down another logline to pitch to my writers group on Thursday, but right now I'm struggling a little bit to come up with ideas. Other than ideas for cheesy Christmas movies ... which would be great but I really need to write a second sci-fi pilot to go with the one I finished in May, so I can prove I'm not a one-trick pony. No pressure!

Added 680 words to the current short story. It continues to be pretty solid and logical, even though I'm absolutely pantsing it—I have no idea what kind of ending I'm working toward, I just know there'll probably be a dragon (because the characters are looking for one).

I like the idea of a probable dragon. In my head, it's that sepia-labeled "Here there be dragons" hanging out on the edge of a map of the world. Enjoy it!

Day 28: Wrote about two sentences on the silly essay, then put it away (if you could slam a file shut I would have!) and worked a bit on my project of pulling together unwieldy notes into something workable. I mean, it's one thing to write stories out of sequence, it's another to scatter stuff all over the place. I tend to mull over stuff in a writing journal, but don't always port the results of the musings to relevant files. Argh.

Ysilme: Lately I've come across the idea (in several different places) that one thing that creative people who are successful and prolific do is to follow the path that seems easiest at the moment -- according to this, working on your drawer fic is just what you should be doing! 8-)

Sylvanwitch: Snake Riders! I'm curious about your weird western -- not least because I also wrote an "unexpected" weird western a while back (well, a long while; it's sitting in first draft in a WIP folder...). Maybe one of Terry Pratchett's "inspiration particles" that sleet through the universe is one that inspires an Unexpected Weird Western. ;-) Anyway I'm glad you're having fun with it!

I am having a lot of fun with it, too much some might say, given the way I'm dodging the work I'm SUPPOSED to be doing, i.e. sending out stories for consideration.
